Written : Mike Lucas Directed : Marianne McNamara Music directed : Rebekah Hughes A lively, rumbustious show telling the story of pubs and beer and the part they have always played in society. Mikron's 40th anniversary production happily coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Campaign for Real Ale. Has the traditional pub managed to survive as the social centre of a community in this age of pubcos, trendy wine bars and chilled out café bars? How has the smoking ban affected pubs? How do we deal with the new generation of 'binge drinkers' and the associated health problems? This fast-paced production will be full of fun, music and lively bar room chat. Book ahead for Pie and Pea supper and to reserve a table or just come along to enjoy the night! http://www.mikron.org.uk/b |

displaying work by Sarah Manders, Sarah was one of the first artists to
ever exhibit with us in 2009, soon to reach our 2nd birthday in May we
feel privileged to have Sarah's work on our walls once more.

About Sarah:
"I have always been fascinated and inspired by the world around me. I left
school at 16 to study art and design at Great Yarmouth Art College.
In1991 I qualified as a psychiatric nurse, this led me to become
interested in using arts to promote health and well-being'.
In 1993 I moved to Cumbria and returned to art college to study fine art.
Since then I have been privileged to use both my art and psychiatric
skills to facilitate a variety of workshops in the community.
I continue to create, having a long standing passion for representing the
human form.
More recently my inspiration has come from the wonderful Cumbrian and
Scottish landscape. I enjoy experimenting with new media and incorporating
these into my workshops." Sarah Manders.

Off The Wall Spooky Tour Saturday 29th October. Report by Mike Goodman from Off The Wall. Fifteen brave souls gathered at the Off The Wall Coffee shop for my first Spooky Tour, just after sunset they boarded the bus hired for the evening from Airbus 2000, with Martin at the wheel. First stop was at the Tarn End Hotel, overlooking Talkin Tarn, where three tales were told, the first about Lizzie Douglas the Brampton Witch, then about Martha, the old woman of Talkin Tarn, finally a short mention of Mary Stobbart’s ghost who haunts the Blacksmiths Arms in Talkin Village. |
|
Boarding the bus we set off for Cumrew, where in the remains of an old castle’s earthworks witches would gather in the 19th century. There I told of the almost supernatural elements of the Helm wind which blows along the edge of the Pennines at certain times of the year.
Moving on we reached Croglin, there in the churchyard I told the story of the Croglin Vampire, within those suitable surroundings, my victims, sorry, guests held on to each other as I told of the vampires attack and the hunt to find and destroy him, Although I must remind you that the actual story is based on Croglin Low Hall which is about one mile west of the village and is now a working farm, I thought that the churchyard was a more atmospheric place for the story.
Quickly boarding the bus we moved on to Renwick where outside the church wall I told the tale of the Renwick bat, a strange creature that was disturbed from it’s lair when the old church was dismantled in the 1700’s, it was supposedly killed by one of the workers John Tallentire, however reports of the creature flying over the village have carried on, indeed the last reported sighting was in 1959!
Watching the night sky we quickly climbed back on to the bus and set off home. We stopped briefly for me to talk about Long Meg and her daughters, the stone circle just outside Kirkoswald, talking about the stories and legends associated with it. Then finishing with a ghostly tale involving King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot.
We finally returned to the coffee shop, I counted fifteen people off the bus, phew none missing, where we sat down to steak and ale pie with all the trimmings, followed by fruit crumble and polished off with a glass of wine or a bottle of beer.
Suitably relaxed I then gave a slideshow on ghost stories from the local castles of Corby, Scaleby, Naworth and Carlisle, finishing with a creepy story about Netherby Hall and the ghostly footprints!
Wish to know more? You’ll have to book for next years Spooky Tour or if you want join me on my next trip in December where I will take you to places where King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table hunted.
Contact Mike Goodman at Off The Wall for more details.

Artwork on sale at Off The Wall
Exhibition of Art 17/09/10
Artist: Diana Harrison
On the 17th of September we held an
exhibition evening for local artist Diana Harrison
From the artist:
Recently, I have been experimenting with a variety of ways of making
images, using scanning and printing techniques, mixed media such as
coloured pencils and water colour paint and textured photographic paper.
These are the results so far.

I am interested in experimenting with different ways of making work which enables me to use a range of mixed media such as photography, collage and paint. I also use found objects and memorabilia as part of the composition as a way of building up a visual story.
The technical form and the visual story hopefully will provoke the viewer's interest. For me, the artist, the challenge is to be able to make something competent and generally interesting but which also has personal resonances.
Photos from the evening
event:

We are always interested getting in touch with local artists to display their work at Off The Wall. So if you would be interested in exhibiting perhaps even holding an exhibition night (Catering available as well as use of projector screen) then please email or pop in.
New Anime and Manga page added 08/09/10
Some of you may have noticed that Off The Wall sells anime and manga merchandise, many have asked why this is.
Well we're fans and we're hoping to form groups (different age groups) this year to meet up at Off The Wall, to of course watch anime on our big screen but to meet up with other fans to talk to about anime and manga over a drink and maybe even try some sushi!
